Professional Male Ballet Dancers who started late
As I said in my earlier post, male dancers are better placed than women to start ballet late. Here are a few examples of late starters who made it as professional dancers, beginning with the most famous of all:
The myth is that Rudolf Nureyev took up ballet at 17 and was previously a folkloric dancer. In fact, that's when he enrolled at the Kirov school, but he had been studying ballet in his home town for some time. It's not clear when he started - however, it's unlikely he was training intensively, because his father was against him doing ballet, so he had to take classes in secret.
David Hallberg took up ballet at the age of 12, and is now a principal with American Ballet Theater:
Calvin Royal, the new sensation at ABT II, started professional ballet training at 14.
The most amazing example is David Zurak, a contemporary dancer with the Martha Graham company, who began studying at 23. Yes, 23!
