Men in Bellydance

Men in belly dancing are generally confined to the husbands of bellydancers - but there is a small number of male belly dancers.  Unfortunately in the Middle East, male belly dancing is still often linked to prostitution - but then, female belly dance doesn't have that good a reputation, either!

Fortunately, bellydance has forged its own identity in the West which doesn't suffer from such associations.   Probably the most famous Western belly dancer is Tarik Sultan of New York:

In spite of the negative press, there are a few men bellydancing in the Middle East, the best-known being Tito Self:

I agree 100% with Tito when he says male belly dancers can't just copy the moves of female belly dancers - if he does, he just looks like a pale imitation of what the girls can do.  A real male belly dancer dances in a strong, masculine way that women can't emulate, making their contribution to the art uniquely male.
